DTI Sees Violation in Wowowee’s ‘Wilyonaryo’
No offense meant to my friends and enemies who are still in ABS-CBN, but I applaud Department of Trade and Industry for finding the obvious.
It took more than a year for the government to finally release the result of its investigation on the “Wilyonaryo” segment of Wowowee. It can be remembered that the show along with the staff and host Willie Revillame and the station was accused of cheating when the production of the show made a “mistake” (or something to that effect) in the implementation of the segment last August 20, 2007.
Quoting Pep: during the “Wilyonaryo” jackpot segment of Wowowee. One of the wheels (violet) used in the game contained both the numbers “0″ and “2.” These numbers represented the prize money a contestant could possibly take home, either zero or two million.
According to GMA News, DTI found that “Wilyonaryo” segment of Wowowee violated the Republic Act 7394 or the Consumers Act of the Philippines. I say they were just caught running naked (if you know what I mean).
Part of the decision read: “A reasonable assessment of the existing game mechanics and procedures implemented at the time of the subject 20 August 2007 ‘Wilyonaryo’ episode reveals that the game show segment allowed a reasonable likelihood of error and provided the host and organizers significant latitude in controlling the outcome of the contest.”
ABS-CBN was ordered to pay the P290,000 fine. Of course that’s nothing compared to how much the contestant could have won.
